Firstly, find the large media files on your Mac, delete the unused videos, apps, photos, etc. Or you can move all of them to an external hard drive, and remove them from your Mac. Thirdly, remove the junk files generated from your web browser, system, or applications. A question from a Mac user: The usage of memory is always above 7GB, even though I don't think I am running that much stuff.

This leads to the occasional hanging of a program and occasional feeling of the computer being lagged. Click on System Memory tab and have a look at the pie chart at the bottom. If the chart is largely red or orange which means you are running out of RAM. Open up Activity Monitor to see the before and after results, you'll find the Free size increases in System Memory.

Can't Miss: Login items are a bunch of services and applications that should launch every time you start up your Mac. When you turn on your Mac, you may notice the process taking longer and longer over time. One of the reasons might be that you've allowed two many items to creep into the system over time. Step 2. Click the Login Items tab, and you'll see a list of apps that open every time you turn on Mac. Every document file on your desktop requires memory to store.

The way how the mac mini is designed it actually has to become too hot when not in an airconditioned environment. I just put it up-side-down with the cap removed. CarbonCopy is a much more reliable backup and cloning tool.

Unfortunately it is not free of charge anymore. If your system does not boot you are in trouble. Time Machine backups need to be restored to a functioning drive, meaning you must first get your system back in working order before they can be used. Users for whom instant recovery is less of a concern, however, will find Time Machine more than adequate. A Mac mini server with OS X These have to be bought from the application store. Several applications compatible only until OS X version You will need to unblock it in Security preferences.

Ever heard of Clean My Mac? I dont think I have heard anything bad about it though. Hi Bjoernar I have a Mac book pro 12 inch which has worked well since I got it. I ve tried rebooting it and the same thing happens over and over again. Any ideas on what I could try? Not sure. Are you able to boot from another drive or USB stick maybe? Check if your system drive is OK….

Stay away from MacKeeper. Its just BAD. They want to pay me to recommend it to you but the free alternatives are just as GOOD. I really hope it will make more sense to you the second time around. BTW, this comment was made without malice but as a genuine attempt to correct, what in my view was, a very obvious misunderstanding.

Easily one of the better performance articles! I tried to make this post as good as possible. I will add CCleaner as a suggestion because I used that software a lot on Windows machines. It works pretty good and its free. The design of the site is pretty old yes. But the software is up to date and safe to use. This software demands each use, you have to enter in a name and a password. Then when I added one it said the password was wrong.

4 things to check if your Mac runs slow

This is the password for your Mac. Something you should have chosen yourself. If you dont have any password set for your Mac just press enter and it should start. I dragged onyx into my applications folder. Do I need to do anything else to make it run? I am not computer savvy as you can tell. Thank you in advance! You have to right-click hold CMD down when you open it and select open to allow it to run on your Mac. Thank you so much for this tips.

I recently purchased Imac and this is my first mac machine.. It was difficult for me to move from window to mac as my Imac was super slow. Your tips helped me to improve speed of my Imac. Thanx for the help for my Mac mini. I have speed again. I have also installed external hard drives. I am an artist and rely on my computer for many things. This has saved me a great expense.

You are a genius. I have an almost opposite issue with sleep mode. Really strange, i would have expected Time Machine to speed up when no one else is using it but it it the opposite. I have disable the energy saver features and the screen saver now , but to no avail. I reinstalled Mavericks yesterday, which seems to make the system a little more responsive less spinning ball , but did not result in a lot of speed change. Not sure why this happens. Never heard of time machine slowing down when the lockscreen is on.

Maybe set the power saving settings temporarily off while you do the initial backup and set them back again when its done.

Reason 1: Mac hard drive is nearly full

Many thanks for this article. Both have gone increasingly slow this last couple of weeks. I only upgraded to Mavericks about weeks ago and have all of the latest Adobe CC software on. Was getting worried it could be something more sinister. Getting the coloured wheel constantly, even just clicking on a folder to see its contents can take anything from seconds. Any suggestions? Hi Bjoernar — coincidence that 2 separate Macs are experiencing similar symptoms?

What is the best way to check out the hard drive? And could a rogue font be the problem? I got a brand new Mac with Mavericks pre-installed. The thing is horribly slow. Faster in everything!! Even replacing the desktop wallpaper takes a lot more time in OSX than Windows. Its simply boring… Have I forgotten something?? The dashboard cleaner will just change my life. I was seriously thinking about getting a pc for my next computer: This was a big time changer for the performance of my iMac I have also followed your steps on this website and it is helpful.

However, i still receive mackeeper ads and i want to know how to prevent them from happening? Try this app: Price was unbelievably affordable! That ought to do it! It comes in tomorrow.

Why is my Mac Running Slow?

I plan on moving my iTunes, iPhoto, my Games, etc. As Gomer Pyle might say: Thank you! I work with audio sometimes video too i. It suggests disks? I suspect the HDDs most but maybe any extra suggestions why it can be so slow? At first glance I suspect that this issue could be related to a failing hard drive. Some drives can show symptoms like you describe. That they are slow if you access files on them. Make sure to have a backup in place the first thing you do now. Then start up disk utility and run it all of your drives to check them. Thank-you very much for these comprehensive and easy-to-use step by step instructions — useful even for those who are not actually experiencing problems but would like to go through a cleaning process for prophylactics.

Well done, thanks! I just used macpaw on my macbook pro. It started a serious typing lag and spinning wheel last week. I am 71 years old and not able to figure some of this stuff out. It is not usable to me this way. Frustrated and not sure what to do next.. It did clean it up a lot but still wheel and lag. If you managed to clean your Mac and it still is slow and showing the spinning wheel it could be a hardware failure. Maybe your hard drive is acting up. I am not saying that this is the case for you, but slowness can be one symptom of hardware failure.

I would suggest you try the other software I have suggested in point 6 and 7. Make sure there are no hardware problems. Great guide! I mean I get your point that hourly backup may be too much, and TimeMachineEditor does seem to be an awesome app to adjust backup frequency. It was a Macbook with a Hitachi hard disk drive. The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run simultaneously with less need to cache and store data on the much-slower disk storage. Doubling or quadrupling the amount of installed RAM if possible will make a noticeable difference in how smoothly the computer functions.

You can see how much memory is installed in your system under the Apple menu by choosing About This Mac. For systems running OS X Lion Quitting unused applications can also improve performance. Quitting or force quitting most of them can substantially improve performance. If you need to force quit, restart the computer afterward.

Speaking of restarting — why do techs always tell you to do this? But more seriously, after your computer has been running for a while and swapping lots of things in and out of RAM, or after a program has crashed, small errors can snowball into bigger glitches. The RAM storage itself can get fragmented, or stalled background processes can begin to interfere with running tasks. Rebooting the computer clears out everything from RAM, stops all running processes, reloads the OS and brings things back to square one.

Modern operating systems such as OS X, Windows 7 and Linux are much more resilient than in days of old, but the need to reboot has not gone away entirely. Each open window requires memory to store and CPU power to deal with. In general, try to keep under say 10 documents open for any single program at one time.

Pick your poison! Sometimes problems seem so vast that a fresh installation of the operating system is a tempting fix. Remember to back up all your data first — I like either Time Machine or making a clone of the hard drive for this task. These work faster and more reliably than online installers, and allow you to start over again if something goes wrong. How to get p YouTube videos in iPad Safari.
